[If you are worried bout where, I been or who I saw or]

While I did not make an official “I’m taking a break” announcement, I’m sure some of you have noticed that the Monday Mix playlist hasn’t changed in a while and the posts have been less frequent. Let me say that I think about this site daily (What can I say? It’s my baby) but I knew I needed to take a little time off. So, what have I been up to lately? A lot – I took my first real vacation in years, I developed some cool video and photography projects, and I spent time being a music fan again. Why is this important?

Honestly, after 3 years of reviewing music from new artists, I reached the point where I felt a bit lost. While I’m always appreciative of the opportunity to introduce you to the best in soul, jazz, and gospel music, after months of frequent submissions, I simply got lost in the shuffle of being both a fan and an editor. You see, when I listen to music, I don’t just play a few seconds, I really listen to the whole submission. I dig deep into the lyrics and I listen to arrangements. That takes time and because I am a team of one, I needed to develop a workflow that would be more conducive to how I listen as a fan, which would then allow me to write as a tastemaker. I had to develop a new workflow because I realized that I had stopped practicing what enabled me to obtain new email subscribers, more traffic, and a small but loyal fan base. I had become so accustomed to relying solely on others’ email suggestions of good music that I stopped finding the b-sides for myself. So, I took a break to go back to the way I listened to music when I started this site and it was a great decision. I gotta tell ya, it felt good to put my pen down and just listen as a fan again.

I even did something I haven’t done in over a year; I searched for music in person. I forgot how nice it is to look through hard copy albums. It’s funny how sometimes the little things are just what you need to get back into the groove (pun intended). My passion for finding good music is back and I promise I’ll return to my regular posts soon. In the meantime, I’ll share one of the gems I found recently. It’s a little old but it’s a good one by Full Crate & Mar called She Was Fly.
