SuCh – Stretch Marks

green1Su Charles, best known as SuCh, is yet another example of why I think we should reconsider the need for labeling music by genres. I recently heard her first full-length album, Stretch Marks and I was so thoroughly impressed with it that I felt a genre label would limit all that it really offers. When I read her bio, it totally made sense that she has met and performed with such artists as Patrice Rushen, Dave Koz, Erykah Badu, and Yolanda Adams. Her music is just that versatile. SuCh says that she writes simple songs about complex things – loss, family, love, life, friendship and hardship. I’d say she delivers that content very well, as her lyrics are packaged with smooth vibes and a very polished voice. I’m not the only one who thinks so; she dazzled crowds at the Vail Soul Music Festival earlier this month.

While I enjoyed all of the songs on the album, my favorite is More. I think the opening section of the lyrics represents a feeling that we can all relate to and I enjoyed watching her perform it live. Check out both below.

SuChMore (lyric excerpt)
I want more in life.
More than just the average things.
More than material things.
I want joy and satisfaction.
Satisfaction in the small things.
I want life to be all I need.
I want more.
I wanna be more than just ok.
Make my own way.

The album was so good that I’ll share a bonus track. Check out Mesmerized too.
