Catching Up With Mike Arroyo
A few weeks ago, a reader suggested that I check out the music of Puerto Rican guitarist Mike Arroyo. As a Christian jazz artist, Mike has released several albums including Straight to Heaven, My Jazzy Mood and his newest release, Transition. After listening to Mike’s music, I understood why some have called him a pioneer in Puerto Rico’s sacred music scene. His style displays his sincere love for God and I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to ask him a few questions about his inspiration and his new album.
Mimi Soul: Could you tell us a little about your new album, Transition?
Mike: Transition means significant changes in my life for the past 2 years. I transitioned from working as a field service engineer to being a full-time musician, teacher and pastor of a church in Puerto Rico.
Mimi Soul: In what ways do you use your music to communicate your faith?
Mike: All of the tracks included on Transition have been dedicated to my Lord. Some cuts are original inspirations and the others are gospel standards.
Mimi Soul: What has been one of your most rewarding musical experiences?
Mike: Playing at the Hartford Jazz Festival in 2008 in front of over 3,000 fans
Mimi Soul: How would you describe the jazz music scene in Puerto Rico?
Mike: It’s happening. It’s growing day by day and there is a lot of new talent playing like veterans.
Mimi Soul: What can we expect from you in the next year?
