What I Like About Music

Someone asked me why I like music so much. After thinking about it for a while, I finally have the answer and I found two quotes that I think help me explain it.

“I really do seek to create music that is timeless.” – Stevie Wonder

Over the years, we have heard music about nearly everything imaginable – faith, love, war, politics, freedom, struggle, heartache, ambition…the list can go on and on. The best part is that although we are moving forward in time, the songs from the past can still be relevant today. I enjoy music because like books, it has history and it helps me understand what the world was like before I was old enough to really pay attention.

“Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn. They teach you there’s a boundary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.” – Charlie Parker

I search for B-side artists and songs because I like the excitement of finding something new from their music, whether it’s a new way to think about love, or a new perspective of a news event. Creative expression is always intriguing to me. And, as I listen to the experiences, thoughts, and wisdom of various artists, I’m reflecting on my own experiences and looking for the wisdom in them.

I like music because it can be a timeless reflection of experiences shared through an ever-expanding list of artists and genres.

What do you like about music?
